Ebook About An elegant werewolf in Edinburgh... 1788. When Lindsay Somerville, the most elegant werewolf in Paris, learns that the man who held him in abject captivity for decades is on his way to France, intent on recapturing him, he knows he must leave the Continent for his own safety. Lindsay cannot take the risk of being recaptured—he may have been free for a century but he can still feel the ghost of his old chains under his fine clothes.… on a mission... While he’s in Edinburgh, Lindsay has been tasked with acquiring the “Naismith Papers”, the writings of a long-dead witchfinder. It should be a straightforward mission—all Lindsay has to do is charm an elderly book collector, Hector Cruikshank. But Cruikshank may not be all he seems, and there are others who want the papers.… meets his matchAs if that were not enough, while tracking down the Naismith Papers, Lindsay meets stubborn architect Drew Nicol. Although the attraction between them is intense, Nicol seems frustratingly determined to resist Lindsay’s advances. Somehow though, Lindsay can’t seem to accept Nicol’s rejection. Is he just moonstruck, or is Nicol bonded to him in ways he doesn’t yet understand? Note: this is the first book of a duology – the story continues and will complete in the second book, Master Wolf.Book Gentleman Wolf (Capital Wolves Book 1) Review :
I love Joanna Chambers’ Enlightenment series, but have been more lukewarm about the rest of her backlist. Gentleman Wolf, however, is her at top form and is probably my favorite m/m I’ve read this year. I started reading this late on a night when I really did need to get to sleep, but still couldn’t help racing through it in one big gulp.Lindsay Somerville, former Cavalier soldier, was turned into a werewolf and imprisoned for decades in a Scottish dungeon before being rescued and spirited off to France. Having lived in France with his friends and protectors for a century, he now finds himself fleeing back to Edinburgh to avoid his former captor and to do a favor for a friend. While there, he meets Drew Nicol in a chance encounter and can’t stop himself from pursuing the acquaintance...and more.Lindsay is sort of a Scarlet Pimpernel type - all paint and powder and pink silk waistcoats, but with a core of steel (and a wolf!) underneath. Drew is a buttoned up, severe Scottish architect who badly needs to be unwound, softened, shown love. Together, they are honestly the verbal equivalent of the heart eyes emoji. Just...amazing and heartbreaking, all wrapped together. There’s a good bit of world building in this book, lightly around the werewolf lore and vividly around the city of Edinburgh in the 1780s, which Chambers brings to life just as it is transitioning to a new, modern identity. Chambers’ prose is lovely - descriptive and sensory without being weighty or info-dump-ish. Lindsay and Drew make this a wonderful read, but the writing and setting really elevate it to something special. As it is first in a “duet”, Gentleman Wolf does not end with an HEA/HFN, but the ending does feel emotionally correct. It’s the proper place to break the story. (Much in the way the first Enlightenment book was) If you can handle that, this is a wonderful read. Basically, if Georgian werewolves sounds like an awesome premise to you, I can’t imagine you not liking this book. It really lives up to the brief in every way. I honestly can’t WAIT until January 2020, when the second book is supposed to be out. I’m eagerly rouging my cheeks and adjusting my clocked stockings.5 stars.Content warnings for vivid discussions of Lindsay’s imprisonment (right at the beginning) and werewolf-book-typical gore and blood (toward the end). 4.5 StarsThough I had a bit of a slower start once I got into this story it was impossible to put it down. I couldn't wait to see how this one would end, since it's part one of Lindsay and Drew's story. So don't worry, though there is much to do in the 2nd part I was content with the way it ended.I'll start by saying English isn't my mother tongue and so I'm not used to reading Historical novels (Romance or otherwise) so it took me time to get into the story as - truth be told - the language was a bit difficult for me at times. But I kept on because I knew I can trust Joanna to bring me a book worth reading and that it was! I really enjoyed this one. Lindsay and Drew's relationship was slow building even with all the nudging from Lindsay's part. It needed time - THEY needed the time. Also it's NOT the right place for Lindsay to find his mate considering it's not just his home town, it's also where he was imprisoned for years and years and just the thought of returning to his master makes him shudder. The story is told solely from Lindsay Somerville's POV. His life have been quite ordinary up until he is taken hostage by Duncan MacCormaic. When Duncan's servant found Lindsay and saw the resemblance between him and the one man his master desires and can never have - Francis Neville - he brought him back for Duncan. Duncan turned Lindsay into a Wolf and imprisoned him for years on years. Using him and abusing him. When Francis and Marguerite come to his rescue he doesn't know if he can trust them but as they are the ONLY chance he has to MAYBE finding freedom he goes with them.Living with Francis and Marguerite is no hardship. They get along great and life couldn't be better even if Duncan is still looking for him and tries every few years to find him. But he has his friends to help and cover his tracks when needed. That's how easily 100 years go by. From a servant he turns into a peacock who enjoys life's pleasures. Men yeah but also and mostly a vain appearance he can flaunt on the streets of Paris with colorful cloths, powdered hair and a bit of rouge on his cheeks and lips. When Marguerite tells him to go back to his home town of Edinburgh (close to where Duncan lives) to retrieve scrolls which might reveal the whereabouts (or demise) of her maker he takes the opportunity, especially as Duncan is far away from home (looking for him actually..). The scroll are in the hands of Hector Cruikshank and so Lindsay's job is to try to charm his way through the greedy old man and buy the scrolls in the cheapest price he can ....While waiting for Hector to admit him he meets Drew Nicol, an architect working on Hector's new house in the "New City". Lindsay more than just likes what he sees in Drew and thus tries to befriend him. First saying he is interested in a house himself and later on admitting how much he is interested in Drew himself. Drew finds Lindsay's behavior (and whole demeanor) quite alarming. The cloths, the colors, his blatant interest in him. He was impressed while being totally unimpressed of the guy. But he couldn't truly deny his attraction even if he regretted it every time he let his guard down. I really understood him. His life hadn't been easy. It was never about what HE wanted / needed it was always about complying, so giving in to what Lindsay is offering him is more than tempting it's simply dangerous and not only because being gay is illegal.Things get complicated when Francis appears in Edinburgh with terrible news. It means Lindsay has to wrap things up QUICKLY with Hector, but it also means his time with Drew will be coming to an end and he cannot bear leaving him behind but he knows he must. Living so close to Duncan's house it NOT a good idea.. But how can he leave when all his being, including his Wolf is BEGGING him to keep Drew by his side.As this is part one things are not truly resolved, they actually get more complicated.. But that's what part two is going to be about. CAN'T WAIT to get my hand on it !!!! I hope I won't have to wait long before it's published. Fingers crossed !Tags: Historical / Paranormal (MM) RomanceMore @ Ultra Meital Reviews.
